STREET LIGHTING

PRESERVING THE PAST

BEFORE

The Victorian column at the junction of Langland Terrace, Brynmill Terrace and Brecon Place was due to be replaced by a new steel column as part of the upgrade scheme

AFTER

After a survey, it was found that the column was sound but the lamp bracket was corroded. We therefore used our community budget to keep the old stand with a period lantern. We hope that it enhances the focal point of the junction and preserves a little bit of our heritage.

KeePING OUR STREETS LIT

A CITY OF TWO TALES

On 21st March 2019, the Labour cabinet voted to finance the new lighting outside the Guildhall, at a cost of £69,000 finance from the Building Capital Maintenance Budget. In December 2019, the council chopped down two lampposts in Oakwood Road without a plan or budget to replace them. The street was plunged into darkness for two months whilst the outside council building where the decision was made was lit in many different colours.

REPLACEMENTS EVENTUALLY ARRIVE

After pressure from Uplands Party Councillors, the work was prioritised and two lamps were replaced in February. Without the pressure the replacement wouldn't have happened for a few months. Uplands Party Councillors teamed up with the local Labour Councillors to fund the works from the community budget.

A PLAN GOING FORWARD

After asking in an open meeting the council have now provided Uplands Councillors with a list of lampposts in Uplands which are scheduled to be chopped down. They have  agreed  publish a report soon to set up a central fund to replace them so we do not have the Oakwood Road situation again.
