BRYNMILL PLAY AREA

The play area was moved and doubled in size in 2007 with the Heritage Lottery grant refurbishment. Its old site along side the Oakwood Road railings was very marshy. The new location offered some remedy. Sadly, the problem persists and after its 2nd resurface an alternative approach is being tried as described below.

A NEW TECHNIQUE CALLED SCHOTTERRASEN

What is it?

What are the benefits?

What are the benefits?

Schotterrasen  is routinely used in Austria, Switzerland and Germany to surface car parks and other areas which have heavy vehicle or foot traffic.  Translated, it means 'gravel lawn'

What are the benefits?

What are the benefits?

What are the benefits?

 · Stop  waterlogging by creating a free draining lawn,

 · Create a species rich lawn with pollinator flowers to increase biodiversity

· Help the space adapt to the impacts of climate change i.e. more extreme wet weather events.

Where it be?

What are the benefits?

How does it work?

The area will not actually be on the playground itself. It will be behind it giving the water a chance to drain before it reaches the playground.

How does it work?

Why has the area been fenced off?

How does it work?

The existing soil is dug out to 50cm depth and replaced with a 20cm deep aggregate sub base and 30cm top layer made of a gravel compost mixture which will then be seeded with a species rich lawn and wild flowers.

The establishment period is normally around  3 months. Once established Schotterrasen requires no additional irrigation or maintenance, following a conventional mowing regime which is relaxed during the flowering period.

Thank you for your patience

We appreciate that these works have led to the temporary closure of the basketball and bench area. They will be reopened in June/July when the fencing is removed.
