COMMITTING TO 20's PLENTY!

COMMITTED TO PROVIDING 20MPH LIMITS IN RESIDENTIAL STREETS

Our programme of delivering 20 MPH limits in residential areas is continuing. Here is the latest one that will go live soon. It covers Hawthorne Avenue, Edgeware Road, Windsor Street, Cambridge Street, Victoria Street and part of Pinewood Road.

LIMIT FOR THE LONS

Uplands Party Councillors were successful in campaigning with residents to secure this limit. We made representations to Welsh Government that displacement from the Broadway scheme was creating a road safety concern in the Lons. The council eventually acceded to our request.

THE VERY FIRST UPLANDS 20 LIMIT

We are no strangers to delivering 20mph limits. The first one was way back in 2008 which covered the Mount Pleasant Terraces. We are hoping to expand the scope of this along Ffynone Road to cover more streets in the near future. We are also looking to expand the scope of the Brynmill 20 mph limit which we facilitated in 2009 as part of a Safer Routes to School grant at the time.

20 MPH ZONES AND LIMITS - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

20 MPH ZONES

20mph zones are designed to be "self-enforcing" due to traffic calming measures which are introduced along with the change in the speed limit. Speed humps, chicanes, road narrowing, planting and other measures are typically used to both physically and visually reinforce the shared nature of the road.

20 MPH LIMITS

20mph limits consist of just a speed limit change but no physical measures to reduce vehicle speeds within the areas. Drivers are alerted to the speed limit with 20mph speed limit repeater signs.

20mph limits are most appropriate for roads where average speeds are already low — the guidance suggests below 24mph. The layout and use of the road must also give the clear impression that a 20mph speed or below is the most appropriate.

WE SUPPORT 20 MPH LIMITS

The reason for this is that we feel that speed bumps cause extra noise and pollution for residents. We can also use our community budget more effectively to fund a limit as it is cheaper. If a limit is not working, we will consider putting in an obstacle such as a road narrowing but only after consulting with residents to see if that is what is wanted.
