SPEED SURVEYS

What information do surveys collect?

Speed survey boxes typically collect data over about a 14 day period. The data in a report consists of:

  • Total number of vehicles
  • Number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
  • Maximum, minimum, median and mean speeds
  • 95% and 85% central limit speeds.
  • Standard deviation.

There is also an hourly breakdown of the data to determine different trends a different parts of the day.

When analysed, the data can provide a good indicator as to which solutions to apply in different road traffic scenarios.

GLANMOR CRESCENT AND SKETTY ROAD

Sketty Road Survey

This was carried out near Beck Hall between the 27th June and 3rd July 2021

Glanmor Crescent Survey

This was carried out between the 1st and 7th of August 2021

The data box and cabling has be sited here to pick up readings. Residents on Sketty Road have seen excessive speeds on this stretch and there have also been pet fatalities.

Maple Crescent and Penlan Crescent Junctions

Vehicles tend to pick be at their fastest here where the road is widest. Again there have been pet fatalities and othewr

BERNARD STREET

Accident Hotspot

The Glanbrydan Avenue interchange has seen a few nasty accidents in recent years. The cause appears to be  excessive speed being built up from the top of the street.

Surveying the Scene

The council have put two traffic survey boxes. One is before the Glanbrydan Avenue interchange, the other before the Beechwood Road interchange. These boxes will survey both the volume of traffic and the speeds at the two points.

Action Plan

Once the data is received from the boxes, we will be looking for a remedy to slow the traffic down on this busy school route and will fund the measures from our community budget. A potential idea would be to switch the priority of the Beechwood Road interchange so that traffic has to stop, restricting the opportunity to build up speed.
